Listening Volunteers

Role Specific
Suitable for under 18s

Could you touch another person's life when it really matters?  Either by discussing their feelings with them directly, by phone, email, text, letter or even face to face?  Or perhaps you could support our branch by helping with the fundraising or IT?
Our confidential, 24 hour listening service responds to five million contacts a year.  We also reach out to our local community by visiting schools, colleges, universities, prisons and workplaces.  With so much happening we are constantly looking for new people to strengthen our teams.  We usually ask volunteers to give three or four hours a week, including some overnight time.  Out of pocket expenses will be paid.
You will experience the rewarding feeling of being able to do something for someone else; contributing your existing skills, learning new ones and finding others you didn't know you had.  You will be trained to communicate warmth and calmness through your  tone of voice, writing or body language and to really listen, by giving your whole attention to the person you are supporting. You will learn to empathise by working to see things as the other person sees them.  You will also learn not to let someone else's experiences or feeling overwhelm you, but to keep separate enough from what they say to help to them. Samaritan volunteers need to be able to listen.  They can also question gently, tactfully, without intruding, encourage people to tell their own story in their time and space - refrain from offering advice and instead offer confidential emotional support - always try to see the other point of view, regardless of their own religious or political beliefs.  Full training is provided including mentoring and on going support.  Minimum age 18.

Since 1953, Samaritans has been supporting those in distress and/or having suicidal thought and intentions.  Volunteers today continue to be at the heart of the organisation. Training given to be able to listen empathetically  - not judge. A DBS check will be required for this role, application form, informal discussion, references, trial period.

Location: We are situated by the Fountains Roundabout at 36 Upper Northgate Street in Chester.

Only registered members can apply for opportunities.
