Do you have a love of reading? Could you help children develop a love of books and reading? Reading helpers provide support to primary school children, helping them to gain confidence in reading, which improves their overall performance in school and helps them grow up to lead successful lives. You will receive training to give you the skills needed in this role. You need to commit to term time during the school year and you will watch young students develop their reading skills and enjoyment of reading through your help.
Full training is given in the strategies you need for this role. You need to enjoy books, reading and be literate. Enjoy working with young primary age pupils. You need to be available during the term time in the school year. You need to be able to commit to regular sessions at the school, be punctual, able to communicate with children between the ages of 5 and 10 years of age. Excellent listening skills and be observant.
Are you over 18? Can you commit to 2 short sessions a week during term time at a local primary school ideally through a whole school year? You also need to commit to 2 days training before you start as a helper. Opportunities available in several local Schools. Volunteers are usually placed in a primary school close to where they live. If you have to travel or have transport, mileage can be paid at .25 p a mile.
